When steam power was introduced to the mill, the boilers had to be kept burning constantly to maintain the pressure needed to run the machinery. In a busy cotton mill filled with timber, oil and fibres, the threat of fire was serious and potentially disastrous. For this reason, a full-time fireman was employed to watch over the boilers day and night. This cottage is a beautiful conversion of the living quarters where he once resided.
